21st Century Democrats In Action - US Senator Sherrod Brown
Food banks across the United States are in crisis. The problem is particularly acute in Ohio where food reserves intended to last until July are now projected to run out by February – forcing food banks to ration their supplies and turn hungry families away.
Thankfully, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has responded to this crisis by introducing emergency legislation to fund food banks in Ohio and across the country. The bill would provide $40 million in additional funding for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which is the most immediate federal solution to this potential disaster.
“More and more Ohioans need food assistance, but there is less and less food to go around,” said Brown, the first Senator from Ohio in 40 years to serve on the Agriculture and Nutrition Committee. “Standing in line at food banks, working families are teetering on the edge. Families are facing an impossible choice this winter – heat or eat. With more people in need, the government must come through.”
The United States is the wealthiest country in the world, but many American are still going hungry this holiday season. This is a time when government, private industry and individuals must come together and work for the common good. If you would like to contribute to this effort please use this Food Bank Locator to find your local food bank or you can give to America’s Second Harvest – a national food bank network.

I want to particularly say thank you to the 1,224 donors who gave money through ActBlue. They contributed $93,753.
The point is those who could pitched-in to help run a vigorous northwest Ohio campaign that forced national Republicans to spend a lot of money to defend a safe seat.
We were quite happy to raise enough money to pay the salary of one field organizer for the campaign in the last week. Jesse Gannon was the northwest Ohio coordinator for Sherrod Brown’s U.S. Senate race. He took a week off from his duties in the U.S. Senate to go to Defiance, Ohio and get-out-the-vote there.
Finally, this race was a warm-up for the 2008 battle for Ohio. I hope everybody realizes we have our work cut out for us as we look ahead to next year. Nonetheless, I am very optimistic about our ability to win Ohio.
Yesterday’s results are a harbinger of things to come: the Republicans are on notice. We are going to fight them throughout the state for every vote next year.
Special Election Results
Ohio – District 5
Robert Latta (Rep) ................56,367…..56.9%
Robin Weiruach (Dem) .......42,563…..43.0%
Precincts Reporting: 100%
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland for Robin Weirauch (OH-5)
Update: It is all hands on deck for this extremely close race. US Senator Sherrod Brown is campaigning with Robin in Ohio. As the Senator told a group of Weirauch supporters yesterday, “If you each get five people, it will actually matter in this race. Go out and find five people each in the next 48 hours, and we’re going to have a new congresswoman.”
Update II: Apparently the Republican Establishment has not been thrilled with Bob Latta’s performance thus far (from Daily Kos).
"A Brand New Day"
